Alvin A. Camba is a Doctoral Student in Sociology at Johns Hopkins University. He studies the political economy of development from a global perspective. Using detailed ethnographic fieldwork, macrohistorical perspective, and mixed methods research, he focuses on analyzing historical mechanisms that embed regions and states toward particular development pathways within the global circuits of capital. His research agenda aims to understand Southeast Asia’s past and present trajectory through an analysis of its economies, states, and environments. At the moment, he is focusing on Chinese investments in Southeast Asia to make sense of Southeast Asia’s emerging development dynamics in the 21st century. Some of his works have been appeared in the following: Everyday Political Economy of Southeast Asia (edited volume, Cambridge University Press), The Extractive Industries and Society, Austrian Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, and the Journal for the Study of Religion Nature and Culture.
